Faith Formation Fall 2007
Care, Share, Create, Serve The Church of the Heavenly Rest is an Anglican community dedicated to creating an environment that is rich with opportunities for individuals to discern their ministry and means of growth in faith. Centered in God and rooted in the liturgy, we encourage continual faith formation among members of all ages through communion with God and one another and through practices that lead to growth in faith, love, and service. Adult Faith Formation includes Weekday as well as Sunday offerings.
Sunday Morning 9:30 a.m.
Journey Through the Bible Class This class will experience a variety of approaches to Bible study beginning with a study of the book of Genesis led by Dr. Susan Pigott, a specialist in the Hebrew scriptures and a professor at Hardin Simmons.
Journey through the Church This class is taught by historian Dr. Robert Pace, will include interesting explorations of Anglicanism, church history, theology of the church, and more.
Several teachers and experts in various fields will lead the newest class, Journey through Adulthood (not to be confused with Journey TO Adulthood). This course will explore a full cornucopia of practical matters in Christian living from family life to health to ethics to prayer to community outreach and everything in between.
Inquirers Class - The Inquirers Class, taught by The Rev. Scott Mayer, begins in February and is for anyone interested in learning more about the Episcopal Church and, in particular, for those seeking confirmation. These classes will be held in the Parish House corner classroom at 9:30 a.m.
Holy Eucharist is the central faith formation offering and is celebrated at 8:00 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. on Sundays, 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, 12:10 p.m. on Thursdays and with the Brotherhood of St. Andrew at 6:30 a.m. on the 1st, 3rd, and 4th, Tuesdays of each month.
Programs During the Week
Monday The Rector’s Study , led by The Rev. Scott Mayer, meets in the choir room at 7:00 p.m. beginning September 9. during the fall semester, the group will discuss The Soul of Christianity: Restoring the Great Tradition by Huston Smith and Radical Optimism: Spirituality in an Uncertain World by Beatrice Bruteau.
Tuesday Education for Ministry, commonly known as EFM, is a program of theological education developed by University of the South. Students sign up one year at a time for this small group 4-year program which covers Old and New Testaments, church history, liturgy and theology. (EFM is for 4 years, but the student is asked only for a one-year commitment.) During the school year participants meet one evening a week for 3 hour sessions. Contact Art Goolsbee or The Rev. Mary Glover for more information.The Centering Prayer Group meets at 7:00 p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month OR at 4:00 p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. The format for the Tuesday and Thursday classes will be identical.
St. Margaret's Guild
Wednesday Canterbury for College Students The Rev. Mary Glover leads this group which meets at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday evenings in the Bishop Garrett Room. Meeting times may be subject to change.
Thursday Ladies Bible Study and Prayer Group meets on Thursday mornings at 9:30 in the Bishop Garrett Room. Contact Jerri Alexander or Peggy Beckham for additional information.Centering Prayer Group meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Note additional information under "Tuesday" above. Healing Prayer Group is facilitated by Amanda Watson and meets at 6:30 p.m. on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Thursdays of each month at 6:30 p.m. Members meet to pray and study scripture as a means of re-discovering the healing ministry in the midst of a sacramental church.
Friday Books and Bible This discussion group is led by Associate Rector, Mary Glover and will use books on faith and theology, along with related Bible studies, to lead into discussions about our own questions, spiritual exploration and journeys of faith. The reading pace and time together will be casual. Friday mornings at 10:00 in the Library.
Additional Opportunities Morning Prayer is read each weekday at 8:00 a.m. in the Chapel. Please use the North Sixth Street church entrance.
Interfaith Council Anyone of any faith tradition is invited to participate in the Abilene Interfaith Council. A tentative schedule for 2007 is as follows: Tuesday, Sept. 18 - Noon; Thursday, Oct. 18 - 7:00 PM; Tuesday, Nov. 20 – Noon; Tuesday, Dec. 18 - Noon; Thursday, Jan. 17 - 7:00 PM; Tuesday, Feb. 19 – Noon; March TBD; Tuesday, Apr. 15 - 12 Noon; Tuesday, May 20 – Noon. Anyone interested in attending should email the Rev. Roz Thomas at padreroz@suddenlink.net in advance to be sure when the meeting is, since group decisions and outside speakers may affect meeting times.
