EASTER STORY Cantata by Macon Sumerlin Performed by the Heavenly Rest Choir with Orchestra April 30, 2006 AUDIO LINK large file loads slowly A TRIBUTE TO MACON SUMERLIN 1919-2005
During 2005-2006 MUSIC AT HEAVENLY REST is presenting several of the late Macon Sumerlin’s music compositions as a tribute to his musical genius and his life. Dr. Sumerlin was a long time member of Heavenly Rest and was a renown composer and teacher. Macon Dee Sumerlin was born on October 24, 1919 in the North Roby community of Fisher County, Texas, the oldest child of Arthur Dee and Essie Mae Weems Sumerlin. He was a graduate of Roby High School, Hardin-Simmons University, and the University of Texas at Austin. He did his doctoral studies in Music Composition at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree from the Texas Guild of Composers. He was one of the earliest composers and teachers of electronic music. His musical compostions have been performed by orchestras (like the Houston Symphony), bands and choirs throughout the United States and in Europe. His compositions are numerous including 49 orchestra/band and solo instruments pieces; 9 organ/piano pieces; 5 Synthesizer and tape compositions; 52 chorus and solo pieces; 1 handbell composition and 6 opera, cantata and musical selections. These composition were written from 1940 until his death on February 6, 2005 at age 85. Dr. Sumerlin served as an Air Force instructor during World War II. He taught Music Theory and Composition at both Hardin-Simmons University and McMurry University in Abilene, serving for a time as Chairman of the Division of Fine Arts at McMurry. His was an inventive and enquiring mind, and he never stopped learning. His is survived by his loving family: Bobbie, his wife of 53 years (former Cooper High School, Abilene Choir Director) and two sons, John Sumerlin of Providence, Rhode Island and Mike Sumerlin and his wife Rindy of Houston and one grandson Austin Sumerlin of Houston; two sisters Merle Lovett of Roby, Texas and Margarette Petre of Abilene, Texas.
