Theme: Celebrating the
resurrection of the Lord. The season of the coming of the Holy Spirit and the
growth and spread of the church. Pentecost is celebrated as the birthday
of the Church by the power of the Holy Spirit and is the fiftieth day of
Easter. Pentecost is not the coming of the Holy Spirit; but,
rather the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on human flesh to give birth to
the Church.
Color: On the day of Pentecost (a Sunday) the color is red,
representing the tongues of fire that rested upon the head's of the
disciples at the beginning of their apostolic ministry. The rest of the
season is marked by green vestments and hangings which represent the
growth and development of the church throughout the world.
Time: The season of Pentecost covers the time from the end of
Easter until Advent. It is the longest season of the year covering
anywhere from 5 to 6 months of the church year. It is sometimes referred
to as the season of "ordinary time".
